'Water Memoirs'
Water Memoirs is an invitation into a mystical, weightless world, where the boundaries between dream and reality blur. Tharien’s work draws viewers into an ethereal realm defined by the hypnotic power of water—where innocence and beauty coexist in a delicate dance, and light and dark interweave. Through this series of paintings, the artist explores the haunting allure of this fluid domain, capturing its strange tranquility.
Water, in all its forms—whether it flows through rivers, lakes, or vast oceans—holds a sacred, living spirit. It is the giver of life, sustaining ecosystems and nourishing the earth. Its memory runs deep, capturing the essence of time, and its reflections act as metaphors for human existence: a surface that can deceive, offering what we long to see, yet often hiding the deeper, unseen realities beneath.
She spends a great deal of time in tidal pools, rock pools, ponds, and swimming pools, photographing the intricate details that catch her eye.
Tharien uses them as references in her paintings, drawing on the unique play of light, shadow, and movement to create immersive, layered works of art. Often, it’s the subtle beauty of these moments—ones that might go unnoticed by the casual observer—that inspire her. The artist's keen perception allows her to see beyond the surface, almost as if viewing the world through 3D eyes.
She believes nature is a reminder to reconnect with the cosmos, to tune into its frequencies, and to align with one’s true self. However, her work also serves as a powerful call for environmental consciousness. By subtly incorporating discarded, "trashy" elements into her paintings—often hidden within vibrant, joyful colours and captivating imagery. In her art, Tharien emphasizes the urgency of change and calls for reflection, action, and, above all, a deeper respect for the life-sustaining waters that bind us all.
