Blessing Blaai

Born in Johannesburg (1994 - ), lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Blessing Blaai is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice bridges painting, drawing, printmaking, and mural art. Shaped by his upbringing in Troyeville, Johannesburg, Blessing’s work reflects the layered relationship between urban environments, memory, and the natural world. His semi-abstract visual language explores how city life transforms and erodes the landscapes, both the physical and emotional, which define the human experience. Working primarily with ink, paint, watercolor, and mixed media, Blessing’s compositions probe themes of trauma, resilience, and renewal. His fluid mark-making and conceptual depth evoke the tensions between destruction and regeneration, drawing attention to both ecological and psychological fragility.

Blessing began his formal art training at 32 Flavours Art Studio, later completing a three-year printmaking programme at Artist Proof Studio. In 2016, he received the Council Chambers Totem Award and has since built a diverse portfolio encompassing fine art and murals. An active participant in South Africa’s contemporary art scene, Blaai has exhibited at Gallery 2, Johannesburg, and his work has been featured in group exhibitions such as African Mobilities: This Is Not a Refugee Camp (2020) and the A3E Programme Exhibition at MINI Bavaria Midrand (2019). He has also contributed to arts education through the Market Foundation, facilitating creative programs for children at Windybrow Theatre in Hillbrow. Now represented by Gallery MOMO, Blaai continues to expand his practice, exploring identity, place, and collective memory through a socially engaged, experimental lens.
